The Titchfield History Society have completed a second part towards remembering The Hinton Children Tragedy.
The first part being the production of the book ‘The Titchfield Tragedy’, where you can read about this awful incident which happened in a house on The Green at West Street in 1891.
The second part being brighter in that 3 trees were planted in the garden of The Village Hall, Southampton Hill, from proceeds raised at the events held on The Queen’s Jubilee last year.
With the help of Nick Girdler and Colin Wilton-Smith there now stands 3 Amelanchier trees for the village to enjoy, giving flowers in the Spring, followed by late Summer berries, and then gorgeous fiery red leaf display in Autumn. A memorial plaque will be erected shortly at the site to state who the trees are dedicated to, these being the three children, Augusta Hotson, Frederick Hinton and William Hinton.
Thanks also go out to Stewart’s Garden Centre for their help and donation towards the project, and to Patricia Fox for her expert advice.

Bridge Street flooded
After several days of heavy rain
After several days of heavy rain and strong winds the River Meon has burst its banks along most of its length.
Bridge Street, Titchfield.
Many of the fields alongside the river and canal are feet underwater.
At Bridge Street the river is flowing across the road causing most, but not all, drivers to turn around.
There are some ‘Flood’ signs but’ the road has not been closed.
At the moment there are no Flood Warnings for the area but, given the amount of rain expected to fall right across the South, the situation can very quickly change.

Sea Shepherd UK Marine Debris Team invite you to join them in a beach clean, Saturday 19th Feb, starting at 2pm
Everyone loves walking along the beach, but nobody likes walking along the beach covered with washed up litter. Marine debris is having a devastating impact on our oceans worldwide. It's harmful to all marine life, causing injury, entanglement, and starvation when it's mistakenly ingested - all often with fatal consequences.
We welcome members of the public to join together with our volunteers and our Marine Debris Campaign to protect and conserve our coastline and marine environments by helping to remove rubbish from our oceans.
We will also have a stand with information and other activities to get involved in.
Join us by the Cliff Road public toilets before we begin.
We will provide equipment however if you have any equipment of your own please do bring it along too! Please also consider bringing water in a reusable bottle along with thick gloves and wear suitable footwear.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Massive hike in Coastal Parking charges
Fareham Council set to raise cost of coastal parking charges
Fareham Council set to raise cost of coastal parking charges
For a yearly permit for Fareham resident the rise amounts to a 18.75% increase.
The council claim that the rise is in line with other south coast council’s chargers but a yearly pass across the water at Lepe Beach it is just £60
FBC says… F’areham Borough Council has made the decision to revise the charges to its successful coastal parking scheme for 2023. Initial proposals were revised following feedback from members of the public and Councillors presented at a meeting of the Health and Public Protection Scrutiny Panel in November.
Coastal parking will remain free before 10am and after 6pm, meaning that residents can continue to access coastal spaces for exercise, water-based activities and dog walking in the morning and evening free of charge.
The hourly charge of coastal parking in the Borough will increase by 10p per hour, in line with inflation, from 1 March 2023. The £6 per day price-cap will also be removed, meaning that charges will apply from 10am through to 6pm.
The charge for a coastal season ticket will also be raised to a standard rate of £145 per year, with a concessionary rate of £95 being offered to Fareham Borough residents. This represents an increase in line with other councils across the south coast.
Will you pay the extra?

Village Ladies Fight Scaffolders to Commemorate Armed Forces
In July the ladies of the ‘Titchfield Yarnbombers’ embarked on making a waterfall of poppies
In July the ladies of the ‘Titchfield Yarnbombers’ embarked on making a waterfall of poppies to be hung from the eves of the Village Hall as a backdrop to the Remembrance Day Commemorations which take place round the war memorial in situated at the front of the hall.
However, in August the hall embarked on a major building project to replace the roof, which meant the building was encased in scaffolding.
That didn’t put off the 30 ladies involved. Group leader, Suzy Jackson, said “We’d started so we were determined to finish come what may. We put out an appeal for yarn and buttons to make the poppies and had a tremendous response, with one man in Lee On The Solent so impressed with the idea he sent us a case of over £100 worth of wool.”
5 months later and over 3,000 poppies have been crocheted and fixed to nets, but the scaffolding meant they couldn’t be hung from the eves. A quick consultation with the builders provided the ladies with a solution. Cover the scaffolding at the front entrance of the hall making a perfect backdrop for the commemorations on the 13th November.
But that won’t be the end of the story. The Titchfield Village Trust, which runs the village hall, have devised a permanent method of hanging the walls of poppies from the eves so that they can be hung in the years to come on every Remembrance Sunday.
Nick Girdler, chairman of the Trust said “The whole village is delighted with the outcome as are the Royal British Legion, who organise the commemoration, it will be a lasting legacy for many years to come. The yarnbombers have given the village a wonderful addition to our yearly observance.”

Phone Box Referendum
Should take over looking after the Phone Box in the centre of the village?
The Village Trust is asking you to vote on whether we should take over looking after the Phone Box in the centre of the village.
BT have a scheme whereby we adopt the box, and they disconnect the phone system.
Under Ofcom’s criteria, phone boxes are protected where:-
they are in a place without coverage from all four mobile network providers
or they are located in an area with a high frequency of accidents or suicides
or 52 or more calls have been made from them over the past 12 months
or there is other evidence that a phone box is reasonably needed at a site – for example, where it is being used to make calls to helplines such as Childline.
None of these ‘rules’ fit the Titchfield Box, in fact over the last 12 months it has only been used 4 times.
If you vote yes to the proposal, they will refurbish the box and turn it back into the very successful book exchange it became during the pandemic.
The referendum will be held on Sunday 30th October in the Parish Room between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Nominate your hero for a Citizen of Honour award
News from Fareham Borough Council
Fareham Borough Council would like to invite residents to nominate their local heroes for public recognition in the 2023 Citizen of Honour awards.
The Council runs the awards each year in recognition of residents who have made a positive difference to the lives of local people. There are two categories in which people can be nominated: Young Citizen of Honour Award for residents 17 years or under, and the Citizen of Honour Award for those aged 18 or over.
The nominees must live in the Borough of Fareham, and they cannot be nominated by a family member. We cannot accept nominations for previous winners, unless the nomination is for something completely unrelated to the previous awards.
Previous winners have been nominated for charity fundraising, supporting children at school, coping with something life-changing, or caring for an individual. The deadline for making nominations in both categories is Tuesday 31 January 2022.
There will be two winners, one in each category. Winners will be invited to a reception with the Mayor to sign the Roll of Honour and receive Citizen of Honour certificates, plus they’ll each receive a £100 voucher.
Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: ‘The Citizen of Honour Awards honour those who have made a significant difference to the lives of others in the Borough. We are fortunate to have many remarkable people in Fareham and often they do not get the credit they deserve. This is your chance to show them how much their actions are appreciated by nominating them for this prestigious award.’
You can find out more information and make your nomination on our website at www.fareham.gov.uk/COH. Nominations must be made by 11.59pm on Tuesday 31 January.
Canal cycle path?
What do you think?
In August 2021 Hampshire County Council submitted a bid to Government for £5.4 million capital funding to deliver new cycling and walking infrastructure schemes across the County.
One project included in the bid is..:
Improvements to off-road cycle routes: Resurfacing and widening works along the Hayling Billy Line and alongside Titchfield Canal to encourage year-round commuter, utility and leisure cycling.
Does this mean, if the bid is successful, that Titchfield residents will have the opportunity to comment?
Titchfield Ablaze 2022
Time to order your Christmas Tree
Every year Titchfield village celebrates Christmas by local residents displaying a lit Christmas tree in a bracket fixed to the outside of their houses. Would you like to join in - or join us again - and have an outdoor tree this year?
We know that with the current economic situation, costs rising and Christmas approaching a number of people may decide an outside Christmas tree is a luxury that they cannot afford and we completely understand.
East Street ‘Ablaze’
We have tried to keep costs down for you.
We have approached our supplier and we will be able to supply a 4ft Norway Spruce tree at £13.50 which is the same price as last year. This is a different variety of Christmas tree from the Nordmann tree which we normally supply.
Nordmann trees are more expensive so, in-order to still light up Titchfield, we have chosen this variety of tree. The difference between the two types of trees is that Nordmann trees are a glossy green colour and have big needles with good needle retention. They are slower growing.
Norway Spruce trees have classic fresh Christmas fragrance and structure (pyramid shape) Their needle retention is not as good but they are fine outdoors and are used in Trafalgar Square and 10 Downing Street. They are a faster growing tree.
Order Forms are available from Hadlows the Butchers.
Thank you for joining us in lighting Titchfield for Christmas please place your order to guarantee a Christmas tree.
The trees will be ready for you to collect from 9.30am - 1.30pm on Saturday 3rd December from the Yard entrance, going up West Street from village Yard is on left before path to Garsons. These trees are available for Titchfield Village residents - outside trees only. Please tell your neighbours and friends in the village if they do not know.
We are a group of local volunteers who co-ordinate the trees; placing an order for 300 English grown trees. They are delivered to the village for collection. The trees will be trimmed but may need further trimming by you to fit into your bracket. T
he large Christmas Tree on the green is sponsored again this year by Hadlows the butchers and with lights provided by Freemantles, Insurance sponsored by the Village Trust, transport by Mark Harris and the star by Tony Traves.
