Phone Box Referendum
Should take over looking after the Phone Box in the centre of the village?
The Village Trust is asking you to vote on whether we should take over looking after the Phone Box in the centre of the village.
BT have a scheme whereby we adopt the box, and they disconnect the phone system.
Under Ofcom’s criteria, phone boxes are protected where:-
they are in a place without coverage from all four mobile network providers
or they are located in an area with a high frequency of accidents or suicides
or 52 or more calls have been made from them over the past 12 months
or there is other evidence that a phone box is reasonably needed at a site – for example, where it is being used to make calls to helplines such as Childline.
None of these ‘rules’ fit the Titchfield Box, in fact over the last 12 months it has only been used 4 times.
If you vote yes to the proposal, they will refurbish the box and turn it back into the very successful book exchange it became during the pandemic.
The referendum will be held on Sunday 30th October in the Parish Room between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Nominate your hero for a Citizen of Honour award
News from Fareham Borough Council
Fareham Borough Council would like to invite residents to nominate their local heroes for public recognition in the 2023 Citizen of Honour awards.
The Council runs the awards each year in recognition of residents who have made a positive difference to the lives of local people. There are two categories in which people can be nominated: Young Citizen of Honour Award for residents 17 years or under, and the Citizen of Honour Award for those aged 18 or over.
The nominees must live in the Borough of Fareham, and they cannot be nominated by a family member. We cannot accept nominations for previous winners, unless the nomination is for something completely unrelated to the previous awards.
Previous winners have been nominated for charity fundraising, supporting children at school, coping with something life-changing, or caring for an individual. The deadline for making nominations in both categories is Tuesday 31 January 2022.
There will be two winners, one in each category. Winners will be invited to a reception with the Mayor to sign the Roll of Honour and receive Citizen of Honour certificates, plus they’ll each receive a £100 voucher.
Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: ‘The Citizen of Honour Awards honour those who have made a significant difference to the lives of others in the Borough. We are fortunate to have many remarkable people in Fareham and often they do not get the credit they deserve. This is your chance to show them how much their actions are appreciated by nominating them for this prestigious award.’
You can find out more information and make your nomination on our website at www.fareham.gov.uk/COH. Nominations must be made by 11.59pm on Tuesday 31 January.
Canal cycle path?
What do you think?
In August 2021 Hampshire County Council submitted a bid to Government for £5.4 million capital funding to deliver new cycling and walking infrastructure schemes across the County.
One project included in the bid is..:
Improvements to off-road cycle routes: Resurfacing and widening works along the Hayling Billy Line and alongside Titchfield Canal to encourage year-round commuter, utility and leisure cycling.
Does this mean, if the bid is successful, that Titchfield residents will have the opportunity to comment?
Titchfield Ablaze 2022
Time to order your Christmas Tree
Every year Titchfield village celebrates Christmas by local residents displaying a lit Christmas tree in a bracket fixed to the outside of their houses. Would you like to join in - or join us again - and have an outdoor tree this year?
We know that with the current economic situation, costs rising and Christmas approaching a number of people may decide an outside Christmas tree is a luxury that they cannot afford and we completely understand.
East Street ‘Ablaze’
We have tried to keep costs down for you.
We have approached our supplier and we will be able to supply a 4ft Norway Spruce tree at £13.50 which is the same price as last year. This is a different variety of Christmas tree from the Nordmann tree which we normally supply.
Nordmann trees are more expensive so, in-order to still light up Titchfield, we have chosen this variety of tree. The difference between the two types of trees is that Nordmann trees are a glossy green colour and have big needles with good needle retention. They are slower growing.
Norway Spruce trees have classic fresh Christmas fragrance and structure (pyramid shape) Their needle retention is not as good but they are fine outdoors and are used in Trafalgar Square and 10 Downing Street. They are a faster growing tree.
Order Forms are available from Hadlows the Butchers.
Thank you for joining us in lighting Titchfield for Christmas please place your order to guarantee a Christmas tree.
The trees will be ready for you to collect from 9.30am - 1.30pm on Saturday 3rd December from the Yard entrance, going up West Street from village Yard is on left before path to Garsons. These trees are available for Titchfield Village residents - outside trees only. Please tell your neighbours and friends in the village if they do not know.
We are a group of local volunteers who co-ordinate the trees; placing an order for 300 English grown trees. They are delivered to the village for collection. The trees will be trimmed but may need further trimming by you to fit into your bracket. T
he large Christmas Tree on the green is sponsored again this year by Hadlows the butchers and with lights provided by Freemantles, Insurance sponsored by the Village Trust, transport by Mark Harris and the star by Tony Traves.

Local Sewing Group Help Titchfield Village Trust Building Fund
The Solent Stitchers have donated £1,000 towards the hall building fund.
As the result of their extremely successful quilt show, held in July at the Village Hall in Titchfield, the Solent Stitchers have donated £1,000 towards the hall building fund.
Wendy Payne, the Chair of the Stitchers group, who meet twice a month at the hall, said: “we were extremely pleased with the turn out and are more bthan happy to make this contribution which will help keep the Titchfield Village Hall at the centre of our community”. She also added that any further fund raising events they may hold this year would also be donated towards the hall refurbishment.
Wendy Payne, the chair of Solent Stitchers, presents the cheque to Nick Girdler
Nick Girdler, chairman of the Trust, who run the hall, accepted the money and thanked the group for all their hard work in putting on the show. He then outlined the plans for future to remodelling and refurbishment to make it fit for purpose for the next 50 years.
Building work has already begun on replacing all the tiles on the roof and at the same time installing three rows of solar panels on the south side which will eventually bring energy costs in running the hall down considerably.
The cost of the building works is being paid for from the £150,000 the Village Trust has raised over the last 3 years.
Titchfield Open Gardens and the St Peter’s Church Flower Festival 2022
Adrian Whyntie reports on the Open Gardens day and also the St Peter’s Church Flower Festival
Adrian Whyntie reports on the Open Gardens day and also the St Peter’s Church Flower Festival
“As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Titchfield, two events took place exploiting the wonderful talents of gardeners and flower arrangers in equal measure.
“I was asked by the Friends of St Peter’s Church to photograph all the open gardens. This I did and you can see the results of the all the hard work each owner put in. It was a real privilege to be allowed to take these photographs. It was also nice to meet people who were visiting each garden.
“Secondly, I took photographs of all the wonderful flower arrangements displayed in the church. Examining each arrangement in detail, made me marvel at the exquisite work that went into each piece. So much thought and preparation by the arrangers created wonderful art in my humble opinion.
“My late father was a clergyman and organised many flower festivals over the years. I know, from being involved just how much work is needed and how long it takes. I am reminded of a sermon he gave after a particular festival when all the arrangements had gone. He started the sermon with a recording of the song ‘Where have all the flowers gone?’ So, I hope these few photograph will be a fitting memory of a wonderful 3 days in the life of the church here in Titchfield.”
Platinum Jubilee celebrations showed the spirit of Titchfield
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee group was formally disbanded on 15th June 2022.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee group was formally disbanded on 15th June 2022. This group organised and ran the Seniors’ Tea Party and, with the Bonfire Boys, the Lighting of the Beacon.
Thanks to the generous donations of raffle prizes by local businesses and individuals and by the generosity of the public who bought tickets for the tombola, tuck shop and particularly the raffle at the Beacon Lighting, a small profit was unexpectedly made after expenses had been paid. This has been donated as follows:
Hounds for Heroes £70 (They provided the tuck for us to sell)
The Bonfire Boys £100 towards the Christmas party for the children in the village
Friends of St Peter’s £100 towards the fabric of the church
Suzy’s stitchers £103 hopefully the crochet group will continue. They are already planning to make poppies for Remembrance Sunday
Thanks to the generous donation from the Earl of Southampton Trust and from the ladies who made cakes including Titchfield WI members we were able to cover our costs. Again, raffle prizes were kindly donated by businesses and individuals to aid the fun of the afternoon. The Co-op also gave us supplies of tea, coffee etc. Our volunteer helpers at the tea party were magnificent. We couldn’t have done it without them.
We hope that the historic video of Titchfield that was shown throughout the tea party will go on the History Society Web site for all to see. At the end of July we also hope to show this video/slide show in the Parish Rooms on a Friday morning during the Country Market.

TACT (Titchfield Arts Community Theatre) announcement
It’s with mixed emotions that we announce that it’s a wrap for TACT.
It has been an amazing and fun journey, some of us from the start with the Passion Play which was performed in The Square in 2002.
The then vicar of Titchfield, Bill Day, asked Heather Carling to direct a Passion Play to celebrate the Millennium. Heather is RADA trained and taught Drama at Southdowns College. The cast was widely drawn from members of the Church and Village. It was performed in the Square at Easter 2002 and drew a large crowd.
Building on that success Heather got together a cast from members of the Church and Village to celebrate the 200 th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar by performing a series of plays based on ‘Heroes’.
The success of this stimulated a desire for the company to put on further productions. These included an evening of plays by Noel Coward, a Nativity Play and more recently Cabarets of short skits and songs.
These were initially held in the Parish Room, more latterly moving to the Community Centre. The winning formula has always been for the audience to bring their supper and sit together at tables.
This decision to end has not been taken lightly but CoVID has understandably given people a chance to re-evaluate their time and commitments and we have decided to go out on a high!
Over the years we have supported many local charities by donating our proceeds. Our final monies will be split 50/50 between The Parish Rooms and The Community Centre, both of which have been good homes for TACT.
All props and costumes will be donated to Titchfield Festival Theatre.
Our company has changed over the years and we thank each and every performer and behind the scenes supporter for their time and contribution in making each year a success.
We could not have done any of this without the fantastic support from our audiences and we thank you so much for your enthusiasm and participation – we’ve loved entertaining you.

Titchfield Art and Craft Show
Opens -Saturday 23rd April 2022 from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 24th April 2022 from 10am to 4pm
After an extended break the Titchfield Art & Craft Show was very pleased to be able to set-up and run the show again this year. We had to move to a different time of the year, causing some confusion for regular visitors; but without the November ‘21 show it would have been a 2 year loss in our fund-raising contribution to the Titchfield Community Association, the charity that runs Titchfield Community Centre.
The Show had a great turn out of Artists, Photographers and Crafters this year with 130 artists exhibiting 377 pieces of art in the main hall. There were also 18 Crafters in the Malt & Barleycorn rooms selling craft ranging from woodwork, glassware, jewellery, textiles, ceramics, ironwork and even a local micro-brewery.
Over the course of the Show weekend, including the preview evening, we had approximately 800 visitors.
Funds raised
With the funds raised from the sale of Preview Evening Tickets, Entrance fees and artwork sales we have raised a total of £6,000 to be donated. This will help with the ongoing improvement projects currently running at the Titchfield Community Centre.
