From horse power to donkey power

Shortly after closing Titchfield Motor Works, owner Phil Upshall joined the team of volunteers at the Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary.

The garage was established in 1926, a partnership between local cycle repairer Mr Hales and Phil’s grandfather, Edward Upshall.

Phil’s father Donald ran the business until his retirement in 1992 when Phil took over the reins.

The garage was used by many in Titchfield and beyond for MOT testing, servicing, repairs and diagnostics.

Phil closed the garage doors for the last time in 2018.

One of Phil’s jobs now is to greet visitors to the centre.

The charity originally started by buying two donkeys Ollie and Rusty who were giving rides to children on Hayling Island seafront.

The Donkey Sanctuary is open to visitors on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays throughout the year..

If you want to visit the Sanctuary you need to phone the booking number, 07720204685 between 10am and 4pm.
